The results of this article stem from a research study whose objective was to present the prevalence of depressive symptoms, their relationship with anxiety symptoms, and the perception of support from family and social environments among students from three public educational institutions. This descriptive–correlational study included a sample of 533 students (46.2% male and 53.8% female), selected based on the criteria of being enrolled in the educational unit, attending secondary school, and being between 10 and 19 years old, corresponding to adolescence. The instruments applied were the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the Family and Social APGAR scales. The results showed that 37.7% of participants presented moderate to severe depressive symptoms, while 28.2% exhibited emotional fluctuations considered normal. Regarding sex, females reported higher levels of depression and anxiety than males; specifically, 48.1% of females presented moderate anxiety and 65.9% severe anxiety, compared to 51.9% and 34.1% of males, respectively. Adolescents aged 14 to 17 exhibited the highest levels of both symptomatologies. A positive and significant correlation was found between depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as negative and significant correlations between depressive symptoms and the perception of family and social support. These findings highlight the importance of emotional support and family and social bonds as protective factors for adolescent mental health.
